Sent from Chicago to the Kansas Flint Hills on family business, Jaxton Anderson finds himself in conflict with Ami Martin from their very first meeting. Yet he cannot stop thinking about the stubborn young woman and her struggle to keep her own family farm by turning it into a bed and breakfast. Each time he tries to draw closer to her, he makes the situation worse until a series of crises throws Jaxton and Ami together in unexpected ways.

THE LONG WAY HOME is an adventure of love and reconciliation. Touching on themes of faith, family, and fortunes, it asks the characters and the reader "Who are you, and where do you want to be when you're eighty?"

"Staci Stallings writes from a deep knowledge and love of the Flint Hills, and with a compassionate understanding of everyday people caught up in family and life struggles. Her characters and their story will reside in your heart long after you have finished the last chapter of THE LONG WAY HOME."

The Long Way Home A Contemporary Christian Romance Novel edition by Staci Stallings Religion Spirituality eBooks

Jaxton visits his grandfather under duress from his money-obsessed family, but changes as he gets to know his grandpa and determined neighbor, Ami.

Best bits: Valuing people over money is a major theme. The way both Jax and Ami are belittled by their fathers, and can wholly sink into the trap of feeling worthless, is believable and insightful.

Issues: Plenty of typos, including the frequent use of "tarn" in an inaccurate way. Lots of small sections jumping back and forth between Jax and Ami, and an overly flowery writing style. Jax changes rather abruptly from serious jerk to humble, helpful neighbor. I didn't entirely buy it.

The Long Way Home A Contemporary Christian Romance Novel edition by Staci Stallings Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

Something drew me to this book, I know now that it was for the journey. In the beginning I knew how it would end, but the journey through the months was quite surprising. I found myself laughing and crying right along with the characters. And I learned just as many lessons from the dear grandfather as they did. This book touched my heart in a way that is indescribable, it was exactly the lessons I needed to learn, the words I needed to hear, at just the right time in my life. God has a way, he gave Staci Stallings the incredible talent to write exactly what I needed. Thank you Ms. Stallings. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a wonderfully written, touching and warm book to cuddle up with and enjoy looking into your own world as you look into theirs .
Jaxson is frustrated that he has to go to his grandfather's farm, in out in the boonies Kansas, to get the details about the estate. He's only met him once or twice in his life and all he really remembers is that he doesn't want to go back! And, why should he if his mother doesn't want to go see her father? But, his father has decreed it and Jax always does what his father tells him to do -- even if he's seething inside. He shows up in Kansas with an attitude the size of Texas and runs right into Ami who is sure she has his number about his character just by looking at the little red sports car he's driving and his shiny shoes! When he opens his arrogant mouth she's absolutely sure he's not worth taking the time to get to know. But, his grandfather is like family to her and she's not gonna let some sports car driving, shiny shoe wearing, city pretty boy come here and take advantage of him. It doesn't take long, and sparks are flying between these two - and not in a good way - and the little red sports car has been pummeled in a hail storm and the shiny shoes are covered in chicken manure! And, that's just the beginning! Another great story by Staci Stallings as she guides us to discover what's important in every life -- it's not what you own, but how you treat the people you love. Some folks figure that out early in their life's journey and some of us have to take the long road to get home to this truth.
I really enjoyed this book. Jaxton Anderson, the hero, came to visit his grandfather as a selfish jerk, but he didn't leave the same way. Between Ami and his grandfather, Jaxton had some life lessons to learn and learn them he did. A novel with a beautiful journey of the heart and soul, one readers will identify with at least in parts. Heart-touching, warm, and emotional. I laughed and shed a few tears along the way. The characters are well developed, and the setting is wonderful, allowing readers to visualize both homes and the surrounding area in their minds. My favorite part was about the picture he found and the way Jaxton finished it in the end. I loved the line, "It's a fish, let it go," and the fact that Jaxton discovered what was really important about fishing, and it wasn't the fish. I could visualize the painting in my mind as it looked when Jaxton got through with it. I'd love to hang it in my house.
The Long Way Home has become one of my favorite novels of Staci Stallings. Not only for the journey the characters take inside the story, but also the long journey the novel itself has traveled. I am so thankful Staci remained true to herself, her beliefs and her characters!

I never have understood how Staci’s words on a page could make me hate the characters in the beginning and love them with all my heart by the end. You not only feel a bond with Jax and Ami, but all the characters in the novel. .

Although I love a good romance, the true reward is that personal connection. It’s that connection in the beginning when YOU want to throw a wrench at Jax but find yourself talking out loud to all the characters. It’s that connection when you want to jump in and help Ami make her dreams come true that keeps you glued to the pages. It’s that connection when you stay up sobbing till 2 am just because you want to make sure the characters will be ok. And finally, it’s that connection when they finally admit to each other their true feelings (and kiss) that gives you peace and rest. I don’t believe there is another author I have read where I have felt such a powerful connection.

This novel has taken a long beaten path to my home. And I am ever so thankful for the memories, lessons and joy I have shared along it’s way. You will definitely want to join Jax and Ami on their travel home, just don’t forget to pack a box of Kleenex.
Another reviewer mentioned the constant anxiety throughout the book I agree with that reviewer's frustrations - so much so, that I felt like I was reading a soap opera. I struggled with feeling annoyed with the hot and cold emotions of the H and h, too. Sadly, the best thing I liked in the book was that it was clean and the grandfather seemed like a great man.
